Life Of the Party
After the island of garbage developed, it brought bacteria, germs, and disease from all over the world to one place. Soon a new disease had developed; it was a flesh eating disease but it spreads with ease. It was not quite lethal but humanity was not able to cure the disease.Only few people could be treated for this disease. The ingredients to treat the disease are so rare that only 100 people can get treated at a time.
A Tsunami developed and spread the trash of the garbage patch to the shores and streets of cities by shores. Thousands were infected by the flesh eating bacteria. A cure did not exist yet and treating everyone who had contacted with the disease was impossible. The new disease affected the homes, businesses, and the lives of people who were part of this epidemic. It took months for people to even begin to attempt to regain the lives that they once led in a great civilization. The cities and towns near the coasts were nearly empty because they were the first to be affected by the Great Pacific Garbage Patch disease. The Earth’s population began to shrink since the only people that wouldn't die from the disease were the only ones not infected. The uninfected people began to create their own towns. They built walls around them in order to keep out anyone who might be infected. It started out as 115 individual towns and communities of the uninfected in the world, but after 20 years it was down to as few as 12. The most successful of the 12 was Sherradsville.
Sherradsville is one of the only places in the world with markets, schools, and laws to govern the people who live inside of it. The current Mayor of the town is Thomas Conswell who has been in his place of power since the community was first developed. He has seen the dangers of the disease first hand, and knows how important it is to keep the community safe at all costs. Thomas is now age of 68 and is prepared to give his title as Mayor to his son, Stan. Stan is a charming, athletic, confident young man that lives a questionable college lifestyle. He spends his time at frat parties and womanizing at his favorite bar, Nebrination.
After a night of heavy partying, Stan wakes up in the town's police station. He decides to ask the guard as to why he finds himself in a jail cell. “What did I do this time Jerry?” Jerry is the Sheriff and Thomas’s closest friend.
“Stan, you can't just go around breaking into the retirement home and throwing a big Mardi Gras style party. I mean c’mon, now the retirement home has a problem with crabs.” Stan begins to laugh uncontrollably at hearing this news.
“Yeah its real funny now ain’t it? Well, just to let you know, your pappy is on his way and is angry as Hell!”
“Don’t worry. You know how this goes. He’s gonna give me a speech about how irresponsible I am and how ashamed I should be. Then I will tell him the lesson I learned and that I will never do it again, so we can hug it out and and have a drink about it.”
“Well, I hope you're right cause here he is.” Stan stands up quickly and dusts off his T-shirt so that he might look more presentable.
“Stan! How could you do something so damn irresponsible? Do you have no shame? Ya know, I wish I could be in your head to know what the hell you are thinking when you decide to do stupid shit like this!”
“I would like to apologize to you and all the elderly who have contracted a disease from me and my college acquaintances and are suffering from the infamous, unforgiving crabs. What I have done is despicable and I have plans to make it up to you in a just way.” Thomas goes from being angry to disappointed.
“Listen son, I love you, but you have become a real jackass. I get that you are growing up and it's a little scary, but this town is going to be yours soon and it needs someone who can think with his head.” There is a long silence as Thomas sits on a chair by the cell with his face in his hands. “Sometimes I wish the disease didn’t get to your mom. Then maybe you would be more responsible with her around.” Stan then thinks to himself, “I really messed up this time.” Stan is still standing in his cell silently because he is at a loss of words. His father has never brought up his mother while yelling at him.
Stan then has an idea and decides to tell his closest friend Christina. “I think I'm gonna leave this town.” Christina is shocked at what Stan has said to her. “What… Why would you say that to me.”
“Think about it, Christina, things aren't getting any better with my dad. I’ve been kicked out of every bar and strip club in this damn town. Everyone here is kind of boring, and most of the sorority girls know I get around so I'm slowly losing them too.”
“It's a damn wasteland out there. You won't make it a day because you would probably get eaten by a crazy cannibal hooker.”
“That would be a crazy cool way to go out.” Christina gets very frustrated with Stan at this point because she knows that when he wants to do something and sets his mind to it, he will do it no matter how stupid and reckless it may be.
“Oh, by the way, I’m leaving right now. I've packed my stuff and I already figured out how to escape over the wall.”
“You can't do this... please stay for me. I… I love you and I always have.” Stan then kisses her in a very romantic way. This makes Christina feel like everything will be okay as long as she has Stan in her life.
“Ya it’s not gonna work out. It’s not you it's me, and you’re kind of bad at kissing.”Stan tells her this as he quickly rushes off with his bag of belongings. “You jerk! Fine, leave, I hope you get stabbed in a bar fight, you ass!”
“This is why I broke up with you last year Christina,” Stan continues on with his plan to escape. He has been studying the walls of the town since he was a young boy because he always aspired to see what's on the other side one day. First, Stan decided he must create a distraction for the guard that watches the wall. Stan attempts to throw a rock past him in order to draw his attention to the rock, but, instead, he accidentally hits the guard in the head causing him to fall unconscious. Stan checks the guards pulse and then moves on top of the wall. After getting on top of the wall he uses rope to help get down the wall. Stan has officially escaped the town of Sherradsville.
After three hours of walking, Stan enters the broken down city of Los Angeles. He sees a rusty building with many cracks on it that turns out to be a bar. Stan enters the bar, and when he does he sees many sad unhappy individuals that are missing limbs and sitting in the booths. Stan sticks out because he is the only person there that hasn't seemed to be affected by the disease. The bartender asks, “You’re not from around here, you?”
“Is it that obvious?” Stan answers jokingly. “Where are you from, stranger?” Stan notices a woman walk into the bar and take a seat by herself. Instead of answering the bartenders question, Stan asks,“Who is she?”
“ She comes here every night. She buys a whisky and leaves.” Stan is amazed that she isn’t missing any limbs, teeth, or eyes. Stan approaches her asking, “where have you been all my week”?
“That’s real cute, now piss off before I hurt you”.
“Oh okay, let me guess, you once dated a really nice guy that you opened up to and felt beautiful and safe around, but he found someone prettier and funnier than you but in reality she just had bigger boobs, so he left you for her. You probably tried to fill the void that he left in your heart with alcohol and one night stands. Now you're cynical and bitter to every guy that talks to you cause you know they only want one thing. The last thing you are expecting is a guy who genuinely cares about your story and who you are. And, if you were to meet that guy he would ask your name and you would say…” She is surprised at how he would be able guess all of that.
“My… my name is Kelly.” Stan decides to use information that the bartender gave him in order to impress her further. “I’m Stan. Ya know, you look like a whisky drinker, that's okay cause I am too.” They get drunk together and go to Kelly’s house for the night.
Stan has officially womanized a woman of the LA wasteland; he wakes up filled with pride and confidence. Kelly wakes up next to Stan; she is panicking and angry. “Oh no, we didn’t!”
“I guess we did, and judging from the state of the bed, it wasn't half bad.”
“You don't understand… I have the disease!” Stan is in disbelief. “No, you don’t, your body isn't missing anything.”
“It’s spread through body fluids, jerk!” The disease is in most of the drinkable water in the wasteland but most people don’t have access to water filters so people are forced to drink the unfiltered water for survival. No one in the Towns could know this because they have isolated themselves from the rest of the world. Stan began to panic because he realized this and yelled “I'm infected now!” Stan is distraught because, riddled with this embarrassing disease, he will never be able to re-enter his town and see his father, college, or friends ever again; he’ll never be welcome in Sherrodsville again. “You monster!” Stan yells at Kelly. “Sorry that was not called for.” Stan thinks to himself, well, leave it to me to pack 3 boxes of survival condoms and not use’em! Many emotions run through Stan, until he decides he has to do something fast.
“Okay, okay, how do I cure the disease?”
“Well, you can’t cure it, but there is a way you can alter its effects. Your options are either you’ll lose that valuable appendage but you will live, or you can keep it, but you won’t live long.” Stan is taken to a tent with a red cross on it; this is the only clinic in all of Los Angeles. To Stan's surprise, there was hardly anyone in this tent. Kelly sees that confusion on Stan’s face, “It’s sad isn’t it? The reason that there is not a lot of people here is because everyone dies from the disease. Ya know Stan, you are the sweetest guy I have ever met in this whole wasteland, so I'm sorry that I did this to you. I didn’t plan on haveing sex with you at the bar, you just have a way with words and I was drunk.”
“Don’t blame yourself. I wasn't thinking, and I made a bad decision.” Just then, it dawned on Stan that he is genuinely taking responsibility for his own actions, just as his father had wanted him to do from the beginning.
The one doctor in the tent checks Stan, only confirming his fear of losing his male body part or dying. The doctor offers Stan two pills: one is green and the other is orange. The green pill would send the disease to his heart instead, causing an immediate death, but saving what he valued most. Stan immediately grabbed the green pill, but then thought about it: would that life be so bad?
Stan didn’t have to think long, that life was not one that interested him - he’d rather die a quick death, his body in tact, than suffer through the alternative. He swallows the green pill and his heart quickly stops within two minutes of just sitting in silence, holding Kelly's hand. Kelly begins to cry and realizes she hasn’t cried in years. She sees that Stan has a condom with his college logo on it, in the hand that is holding hers.
