Tomorrow is the first day of my internship. They will be teaching me as to how to pick up phones, answer emails, and operate the equipment. I am excited to begin my first time working experience in a professional environment. I am nervous as well as accited to begin because of the idea of me making a mistake and looking incompetent.

I am currently in day two of my internship experience in Digital Gym. They are a light hearted, hard working nonprofit business. The staff and my fellow intern make this place have strong sense of community, we are expected as interns to put in hard work to get the best results. I have been assigned the job of promoting up-comong films that will be viewed in the theater. The film that I have been working on promoting is called TAXI. This movie was filmed in the middle east and is in a middle eastern language with english subtitles. In order to promote this film I have to send emails to the demographic (people that might find interest in this film), which would be middle eastern groups, establishment, language teachers and political science professors. Creating the email to send out to the individuals and groups is tedious but very educational. The process of creating the email has taught me the content and structure that goes into properly promoting a film. Writing professional emails is the current skill I am attempting to learn.

Today is the end of my first three day work week. It is not what i had originally imagined, originally I believed that it would be a slow paced experience where I would have had to wait days before being put on a task. Instead, almost as soon as I got onto a laptop, I was put on the task of promoting one of the upcoming movies (TAXI). Promoting this movie consists of sending emails to the demographic that the movie would have applied to (professors/organizations). Promoting movies to the public does not always guarantee a yes from the person or organization I promote to, so I have to continue to add to my list of people to email. Communicating with others over email is not all I am tasked with, I and my fellow interns must manage the front desk when we are scheduled to. Managing the from desk consists of answering the phones and questions of anyone calling our business or in store. This business trusts the interns to complete any tasks given to them in a professional and efficient way.

The Digital gym both looks and feels like an organized, professional business. Everyday when I get to my internship site at 9:00, I enter through the main lobby area. This area has the front desk and a waiting room, once or twice a week I will sit at the front desk in order to welcome people and answer the phone. after I sign in at the front desk I go upstairs in order to great Ethan Van Thillo (owner of Digital Gym), he sits in an area with multiple desks instead of having a closed office. All of the staff have desks that they sit at because this there personal working area. After I great Ethan I then enter a room with tables positioned facing the wall with Macs on them. I sit at my computer and perform the tasks that are assigned to me. Around 11:00 I will take a 30 minute lunch break, after the lunch break I return to my computer area and continue to the task at hand. At 3:00 my 6 hour work day is over, since I need to get 30 work hours a week I work 6 hours a day.
We have a green screen area, open back area, and a computer room. These rooms are dedicated to the production of videos. There is equipment that is provided to us such as microphones, cameras, tripods, and editing applications.

Recently we have been asked to choose a modern day, relavent issue that we could investigate. I decided to choose a divers subject that has hardly been used, male sexism. After choosing a subject we were then shown to the green screen room, this is where we where tout about interview camera angles, how to operate the camera, and how to use the microphone. The video style that I am going with is an interview style, satirical, sarcastic, and over all funny outlook on the situation. I had written interview questions and hypothetical questions in order to get opinions and ideas from one male and one female. I am getting critique on my outline by my fellow interns and the staff of the Digital Gym. The next step would be recording my interview questions for both the male and female opinions and ideas. After getting my recording done, I would have to begin the process of editing my footage in order to make my video around three minutes and still entertaining.

Having an internship at Digital Gym is very different from my student life. At HTHI I would have to be at school around 8:15 and get out of school at 3:30, I have to be at my internship site at 9:00 and I leave at 3:00 in order to meet the required 6 hours a day. My responsibilities as a student are far different from my responsibilities as an intern. As a student I worry about myself mainly, but as an intern I always work as a team, this means I communicate with the others in my work place because we are all working for a common goal: a successful company. Digital gym is fairly different in a social aspect, since we all do work as a team, there are no groups of friends that exclude others who are not there friend already. This promotes synergy and professional work flow.

Our experiences are fairly close because we both use Mac computers to complete our work, some of our experiences differ varying on location and utilities at his use.

His work experience is much more physical than mine is. I work with promoting movies and understanding filming equipment and he works with construction and machinery.

During my time at my internship (although short) has changed my perspective of how I learn and what to expect in a professional environment. School classrooms should teach students about how to use synergy, promote a healthy workflow, and be able to learn from mistakes to improve on them. After learning these things from my internship I will now be able to use them in a classroom environment, this means that I will handle projects and assignment like professional work (such as the work I would be assigned in the working place). This would further improve on my skills that I have begun to learn in my Internship at Digital gym.

IPOL prep Questions:
1. How did you make a meaningful contribution to your workplace?
My job as an intern is to do the tasks assigned to me by the staff of digital gym. So far I contribute by sending emails to people/organizations that the movie could apply to, move objects around the office space, and providing any other support.
2. How was your work as an intern meaningful to your education?
After being an intern my views of how I learn in the sense that now I know to ask more questions, be persistent, and always working until the final product is as close to perfections as possible.
3. How was your work significant or meaningful for you beyond school and your specific internship site?
Now I have a new view of how the working wold works. Now I know that the way to have a successful business is to promote synergy, direct workflow, and be as productive as possible in a workplace.
4. How did your project(s) go from an idea or inspiration to a final product?Share out the process & be sure to upload evidence(s) of this work.
With support from our editing software/camera/lighting expert Simon, and cooperation from my fellow interns the production of my video is possible. Before beginning my video project I had to choose a subject, the subject had to be an issue that affects people in America socially. I chose male sexism because it is a very real and hardly talked bout subject. After choosing my subject I created a google doc that cover the content of my video (https://docs.google.com/document/d/1CDblEbZZf8AVo3kVLIgTLkAdW6R0i-MjmjtCWfK2XfA/edit). After getting my content approved I began to interview my fellow interns. The next and final step was to put all my footage on a video editing program (iMovie).
5. What did you learn about yourself through working on the internship project(s)?
I learned that school has prepared me for the working world more than I had originally thought. I has fairly intimidated by the idea of working for a business because I was afraid that I wouldn't be able to complete the work assigned to me. But since I have learned how to use relevant programs like google docs, final cut pro, and iMovie I am no longer worried about being able to deliver a string workflow.

1. What new appreciations did you develop while working as an intern? Why?
A new appreciation that I had developed while working in this internship is people saying good morning to each other (not a choice), not only because it promotes a positive working environment but it is also a good to know who is the building incase I would need to talk to them.
2. What qualities or characteristics did you see in the people around you that you want to develop in yourself? Why?
I notice that the people here always work until a job is done correctly no matter what. I believe this kind of persistence is the reason Digital Gym is such a successful business and if I apply this much persistence to my school work then I would be more successful.
3. How did your view of life beyond high school change or develop during your time as an intern?
Now I have a better understanding of how a multi-media based environment works, this alters how I view any future jobs that I am interested because I feel more confidence in myself as a productive worker, I now know how to handle tasks (as a professional) in a business.
4. How might internship influence the direction of your life?
Internship has taught me a lot about a strong workflow via good communication, knowing how this looks; I can identify if any future job that I have has this or not. This will determine what job I have and what business appeals to me
5. How did communication and/or collaboration at work influence your understanding of professional working environments?
Since the work here is fairly structured, certain staff are more knowledgable of one aspect of the company weather that is rental equipment, movie promoting, or financial situations. This a perfect example of excellent communication because we all know there a person that handles certain situations and it is clear on who handles them.
