Brian, a man that that will defy death and find a way to survive in the wilderness
with nothing but courage and the willingness to survive. "Hatchet," a book written
by Gary Paulson the author. Gary Paulson right about Brian's (main character)
survival story about crashing into a river, Brian survives the crash and realizes that
every decision made is life or death when surviving in the wilderness. Brian's only
tool is a Hatchet that he had acquired before being stranded in the wilderness.
Brian will have to use courage and persistence to survive.
Brian will need to learn to act with valor when a situation occurs that requires
Brian to act with bravery in the face of danger. Brian needs a new identity so that
situations that occur can be dealt with from a new perspective ," Old Brian died
int he plain with the pilot, new Brian thrives out here and does whatever it takes to
survive."(Brian,pg85) This ,"New Brain", believes that he can act with valor and
strength if a situation calls for certain measures. Acts of strength provides Brian
new information on how to handle situations such as building a stronger shelter
and being resourceful. Brian finds that most situations that require valor just need
thought ," It was just that simple, any situation can be solved by just thinking it
through."(Brian,pg115) Learning that thought is one of Brain's new found tools
He can use it to any situation putting Brian in harms way. Instead of eating a
mystery plant that could injure or poison Brian he can attempt to the best of his
abilities Identify other foods in the area like turtle eggs and blue berries. Brian
feels a sense of perseverance when great obstacles are conquered, for example:
Brian is getting attacked by a moose and Brian believes that he wants to persevere
and will not let a moose attack lead to death.
Brian thinks that help will not be coming for him any time soon and Brian want
to use perseverance as new hope of survival. Brian is loosing so many things to
this tornado and figures out he has to start over because everything that he has
accomplished is being taken away by this tornado Brian does not think that all
hope is lost because," this is different than the plain crash, I have changed since
the plain crash". Brian has to use the fact that he has persevered before the tornado
and that is lost or broken can be fixed because of the new found knowledge can
help get everything back. This ,"New Brian", knows how to handle a survival
situation with keeping in mind perseverance. Brain can accomplish so much and
each achievement gives him confidence ,for example: ," he kills the first large
rabbits and he thinks to himself, I am like one of the predators of the wilderness".
Brian is fast enough to catch and kill agile animals, Brian can use these new fast
instincts to to use as a default reflex that can make being aware one of Brian's of stronger abilities. Every ability Brian has ever acquired is being tested in one
place, not only are these abilities being used Brian is creating new abilities so now
Brian's mind is always aware of his surroundings. Brian has to lead himself
believe that there is always hope in every situation that occurs.

motivation because he wants to lead himself to survival by acts of valor and the
