#BreakFree
Break Free Personal Journey: docs.google.com/document/d/1MRszNrh8dWvWJ5pQNghDtLiViRXW-OtbtHKvOtR8JZ4/edit
Motives For This Project: We have grown numb to the words and stereotypes that are so deeply rooted in our society. Stereotypes are preconceived idea about a person or group of people based off of their race, gender, sexuality, religion, ect. These stereotypes are destructive to our society and the people associated with them.
#BreakFree Goals:
- Create a spoken word piece about a time I faced a problem with discrimination. This spoken word piece would later be read in front of an audience.
- Get a video production group in order to produce a short YouTube video that brings a certain issue to light.
Self Reflection:
When I had first heard of the #BreakFree project I assumed that I was just going to simply finish it purely for the grade, but it has proven to be much more than a project to me. I learned that to break free means to be able to understand that we all would like to live our lives according to ourselves and who we want to be as individuals, but we limit each other and ourselves by putting on a mask that shows society what it want to see and to break free means to be able to take off that mask and embrace the fact that we are all different. In fact, one of the most challenging parts of this project was being able to seeing my own differences and acknowledging who I am on the inside, I am able to see the parts of my personality that I don't let show. I realized that I had to embrace what makes me different no matter how "weird" or "unexpected" it is. After I begun to accept myself more, I was even more accepting of other peoples differences and whatever makes them special.
Although this project had become very personal, I had also learned more about working with a group towards a goal. I was in a group of three people for the video production portion of this project, we made sure that we were all able to understand what our goals are and how to reach them. Since I was mainly working on taking footage and editing it, I would work closely with my partners so that we all could see the video progress and assess if we need to make any changes to our interviewing style or questions. Since we were able to work well together our video is successful, but just because we had "finished" the project, it does not mean that #BreakFree is over.
We where able to give the people who participated in this project the opportunity to break free, although this is a good start many more people need the same opportunity to break free. I think project #BreakFree could become more than just a project, and more of a movement for the people who would rather hide who they are instead of opening up.
